FAQ - Service Availability

Q1.
Does the data centre have comprehensive fire suppression to prevent a blaze from destroying the servers and associated information held on them.
A1.
Yes it does. We are assured that this will effectively stifle any fire before it can cause damage
Q2.
Would the data centre withstand direct hit from an aircraft?
A2.
No it would most likely be destroyed.
Q3.
If an aero plane fell out of the sky on to the data centre, have I lost all my data and software?
A3.
No. You always have a safe copy of your data on your own site. On the customer site we provide a server for email, shared storage of documents, spreadsheets etc., it also has a copy of your data. It automatically contacts the database at the data centre and interrogates it for any updates that have taken place since it last interrogated it. This is a process known as “one-way database replication”.
Q4.
If the data centre received a direct strike from the air and my own premises burned down at the same time, have I then lost all my data?
A4.
We would have to go back to the last tape backup, which would mean going back one week for the last one taken at the data centre and removed from site.
Q5.
Can I have a tape unit within my own on-site server, so that I can take my own backups and remove them from site each night.
A5.
Yes, but we do charge a small amount extra per month for this, and it’s entirely your responsibility to make sure these are done and verified.
Q6.
What happens if there is a power outage at the data centre, where mains power is lost for a couple of days?
A6.
All equipment in the data centre is protected by Uninterruptible Power Supply equipment (basically a heap of large batteries). If the power remains out for more than a couple of minutes, then a bank of diesel generators will automatically start up. There is always a minimum of three days worth of diesel to fuel these generators.
Q7.
If a digger cut through the fibre optic cable, which feeds the data centre, are we then cut-off from our data and systems?
A7.
No. There is cable coming out of the other side of the building and the network “self- heals”
